How to Draw China From Memory

Difficulty: Hard · The rooster

China is the final boss of outline drawing: everyone knows it's a rooster, and almost nobody can place the rooster's parts. The head points the wrong way in most attempts, the back arc gets drawn as a straight line, and Hainan — the foot dangling off the south coast — vanishes entirely.

The shape at a glance

China is a vast mass about one and a half times wider than tall. The west is dominated by two huge lobes: Xinjiang's bulge in the northwest and Tibet's broad mass in the southwest. The northeast extends into the rooster's head and neck, pointing up toward Siberia, while the north is a long arc along Mongolia. The east coast runs from the Bohai Gulf past the Shandong peninsula down to a south coast that ends with the Leizhou peninsula and Hainan island.

Step by step

  1. Block in a huge rounded mass, roughly three units wide for every two tall, sitting in the middle of your canvas.
  2. Push the northwest corner out into a big blunt lobe — Xinjiang — with a slight notch where Kazakhstan wedges in.
  3. Thicken the whole southwest into a broad heavy base: the Tibetan plateau, with the Himalayan edge along the bottom.
  4. Extend the northeast into the rooster's head and neck, a long arm reaching up and to the right, ending around Heilongjiang with a beak-like tip toward Russia.
  5. Draw the north edge as one long shallow arc sagging downward in the middle — the Mongolian border, including the Inner Mongolia curve.
  6. Finish the coast: dent the Bohai Gulf near the top, poke Shandong peninsula out below it, then run a scalloped coast down to the Leizhou peninsula and float Hainan island just offshore.

Mistakes that cost you points

  • Pointing the northeast head straight east or down — it actually reaches up toward the top-right corner.
  • Drawing the Mongolian border straight instead of the famous downward-sagging arc.
  • Shrinking Xinjiang and Tibet, which together are nearly half the country's area.
  • Forgetting Hainan and the Leizhou peninsula at the south coast.

Place it on the map

China is the giant filling the space between Mongolia's arc to the north, the Himalayas and India to the southwest, and the Pacific to the east. Kazakhstan wedges into its west side, and the two Koreas dangle off the coast just east of the rooster's chest.

Pro tip: Draw the empty scoop of Mongolia first — that single concave arc fixes the proportions of everything above the coast. Then check your rooster's head angle against the head: if it doesn't point at roughly one o'clock, redraw it before adding coast detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you draw China from memory?
Start with the overall box — is China wider than tall or the reverse — then place its signature feature first and build the rest of the outline around it. Finish with the coastline details, then compare against the real border in a free practice round to get a 0-100 score.
How hard is it to draw China?
China rates as hard difficulty. The rooster silhouette is famous, but the Xinjiang bulge, Tibet mass, northeast head and coastal notches are a lot of geometry to hold at once.
